Men's Retreat Ministry

Men Glorify God from an Athletes Point of View at Retreat at Subiaco Abbey

On November 1-2, sixteen men from Christ of the Hills UMC and two from Mountainside Methodist participated in a retreat at the Subiaco Abbey.

Jay Chandler (chairperson) and his design team members: Rev. David Wilson, Chuck Allen, Wes Kohler, Don Wallace and Bobby Altom chose the title of the retreat," Spiritual Athletes: Strengthening Men with God's Calisthenics."

According to Altom, "We chose this title because as we see it, a spiritual athlete refers to our human spirit, a spirit which possesses the traits of religious values for the purpose of glorifying God. We build this personal relationship, in part, by a training program involving calisthenics developed by us or for us, whether it be prayer, Bible study, study groups or other methods.

Our team is the church, a team that encourages us, individually and collectively, to excel in the game of life. Our analogy is that a physical athlete does much the same thing: acquires skill through a persistent physical effort requiring him to engage in carefully scheduled physical activities. And he does so because he desires to be a winner in this chosen sport."

Videos of various nationally known speakers/authors who have appeared in one or more of the annual Leadership Summits were viewed and discussed by the men, gathered in small groups. After each discussion period, the table leaders reported to the entire group. If you would like to discuss this concept further, you may contact one of the team members through the church at (501) 922-4503.
